LA TORTUGUITA

La tortuga está en el agua,
|
The tortoise is in the
water, |
vive dentro, vive fuera, |
she lives in and out
of the water, |
mira cómo nada, nada, |
look how she swims,
swims, |
para salir de la arena. |
in order to leave the
beach. |
Va despacito, con su compás, |
She goes slowly, on
her way, |
con el peso de su capa |
with the weight of her
cloak |
amarilla, verde plata, |
yellow, silver-green
|
ya es trabajo caminar. |
it is so hard to walk. |
|
|
Un, dos, tres, cuatro, |
One, two, three, four, |
la tortuga ya se va. |
the tortoise is going. |
Un, dos, tres, cuatro, |
One, two, three, four, |
déjala con su compás. |
leave her to her way. |
Un, dos, tres, cuatro, |
One, two, three, four, |
la tortuga ya se fue. |
the tortoise now is
gone. |
Un, dos, tres, cuatro, |
One, two, three, four, |
otra vez la alcanzaré. |
I will follow her another
time. |
La pobre tortuga |
The poor tortoise |
ni pica ni muerde, |
neither nibbles nor
eats, |
y tiene su nido |
and has her nest |
por la orilla verde. |
on the green shore. |
Un, dos, tres, cuatro, |
One, two, three, four, |
la tortuga ya se va. |
the tortoise is going. |
Un, dos, tres, cuatro, |
One, two, three, four, |
déjala con su compás.
|
leave her to her way. |
|
|
La tortuga ya en su nido |
The tortoise already
in her nest |
tuvo cuatro tortuguitas, |
had four little tortoises, |
y las cuatro se han salido |
and the four have left |
arrastrando sus patitas. |
dragging their little
feet. |
Se van al agua para nadar, |
They have gone to the
water to swim, |
pobrecitas inocentes, |
poor little innocents, |
¡ay, que el río, en su
corriente, |
oh! that the river,
with its current, |
se las lleva hacia la mar. |
may carry them to the
sea. |

Turtles lay eggs. They must come ashore to do so.
Females usually nest during the warmest months of the year. Most females
return to the same nesting beach each year, usually coming ashore at
night. Females may spend two or more hours out of the water during the
entire nesting process. They usually lay between one and nine clutches
(groups) of eggs per season.
