Little Tommy Tucker
Sings for his supper.
What shall he eat?
White bread and butter.
How will he cut it
Without e'er a knife?
How can he marry
Without e'er a wife?
Tommy Tucker was a name referring to an orphan in Europe.
In those days, to survive, an orphan had to beg or do something so that
people would want to give them something to eat. As far as social standing,
an orphan had none, so the only mate likely to be found would be another
orphan.
